PRWeb vs PR Newswire: the same company, two doors

· 6 min read

They are the same company, so the real question is which door you are allowed through and what each one meters. PRWeb is the self-serve side: it publishes prices and a named list of refused categories, and when it refuses one, its own policy tells you to take it to PR Newswire membership instead. PR Newswire is the enterprise side, quote-gated on its own site, and behind the only tier-one rate card a buyer can read without a sales call.

This is not a comparison of two vendors. PRWeb is Cision's self-serve brand, and its own product page describes its distribution as "syndication to 1,200+ sites via PR Newswire". You are looking at one company's two doors onto broadly the same rails.

That changes what the comparison is for. The question is not "which network is better" but "which door am I allowed through, and what does each one meter."

The published prices

PRWebPR Newswire
How to get a pricePublished tiersNo public pricing on prnewswire.com; the 2024 Domestic Pricing Guide is public only because the IBPA hosts it
Entry$120Membership $305 a year before any release
Top self-serve tier$480
US national circuitNot sold as a circuitUS1 National $1,020 per 400 words, $325 per extra 100
Metro / localNot sold separatelyMetro $590, other state or local $460
LogoIncluded in higher tiers$595
Image, video or audioIncluded in higher tiers$490 each
AP News direct placementNot sold separately$310 flat

Read the add-on column, because it is where the gap really opens. A 900-word release with a logo and one image on US1 National is $1,020 plus five overage blocks at $325, plus $595, plus $490 — $3,730. The same announcement through PRWeb's top tier is $480 with images included. Those are not the same product, but they are also not $3,250 apart in what a reader sees.

The referral policy is the load-bearing document

PRWeb's editorial guidelines refuse several categories outright and then say what to do about it. On cryptocurrency: "PRWeb will not distribute content related to cryptocurrency -- digital assets, bitcoin, mining, etc." On funding: "PRWeb will not distribute content related to venture capital announcements -- e.g., 'series A funding,' etc." And for both: "All such content should be referred to PR Newswire membership for consideration."

That is a company stating in writing that its cheap door is shut on your category and its expensive door may be open. It is unusually candid, and it is the single most useful sentence for planning a budget in a restricted category.

The rest of PRWeb's refused list is long and worth reading before you pay: advertisements, sexually explicit content, link spam, reprints, duplicate content, third-party legal releases, content intended to harm, unauthorised ticker symbols, online gambling, payday loans, non-compliant pharmaceuticals, unsafe weight-loss products, misleading health supplements, sexual-enhancement products, get-rich-quick schemes, stock recommendations and black-hat SEO tactics.

PR Newswire, by contrast, publishes no content policy of its own that we could locate. What it publishes is a rate card that names the verticals it wants — cannabis is a named vertical on the Top Markets circuit at $790, and crypto has its own Global Crypto and Financial Markets Premium circuit at $5,600 per 400 words. That is the pricing of risk rather than the refusal of it, and it is the clearest such statement anywhere in this industry. We wrote up what crypto distribution actually costs against that number.

The word meter is the other real difference

PRWeb's tiers do not publish a per-word overage. PR Newswire's card does, and it is steep: 400 words included, then $325 per 100 on the national circuit, $1,535 per 100 on World Financial Markets, $2,760 per 100 on Premier Global.

For a long release — a product launch with a spec table, a data release, a merger announcement with a forward-looking statements block — that meter can exceed the base price. We priced every line on the card so you can cost a specific draft rather than guess.

There are at least four priced doors onto this network

PRWeb is the most visible of them, not the only one. Published prices that name the same upstream:

  • PRWeb — $120 to $480, "syndication to 1,200+ sites via PR Newswire".
  • eReleases — $399, $499, $699, sold as "custom national PR Newswire distribution", and quoting the equivalent PR Newswire list value at $1,145 to $1,875.
  • PRUnderground — US National $419.99, naming the "PRNewswire/Cision network".
  • 24-7PressRelease — a $479 tier that says PR Newswire national in as many words, capped at 375 words.

So $399 and $1,020 can put your text onto the same circuit. What changes across that gap is the word allowance, how many targets you actually get, whether a logo is included, and whether anyone tells you what published. How the reseller layer works sets out the mechanics; who owns which wire sets out why the doors exist.

What does not change between the doors

  • Neither guarantees publication. A wire distributes; downstream sites republish at their own discretion.
  • Link treatment is the same. Almost every syndicated press link is nofollow or rel="sponsored", whichever door you came through. Why that is normal rather than a defect.
  • Neither reports what actually published as standard. Both report distribution.
  • Nothing is permanent. Press-release hub pages are pruned at the publisher's discretion; we have observed entire archive paths returning 410 Gone.

How to decide

Ask three questions in order. Is my category refused by PRWeb? If yes, the self-serve door is closed and the referral sentence tells you where you are being sent. How long is my release? Past about 600 words the tier-one meter starts to dominate, and a mid-market wire with unlimited words becomes the better-value comparison. Do I need a circuit that only Cision sells — Multicultural Markets, a specific metro, the crypto or financial premium circuits? If yes, that is the enterprise door and there is no substitute.

Where we sit

We are a reseller, like most of the vendors named above, and we buy distribution from wire partners and mark it up. Our packages run $599 to $899. We are not on PR Newswire's rails and we do not claim to be — naming an upstream you do not have is the most common misrepresentation in this market, and the native-permalink test settles it in about a click.

What we add is that we open the published URLs and report what actually went live, marked as measured or as supplier-reported. Both labels appear in the published sample. We do not promise rankings, permanent pages, or that any named outlet will publish.

What we could not establish

PR Newswire publishes no content policy of its own. The 2024 card is the most recent public pricing we could find, and Cision publishes nothing newer; a 2026 card may exist behind a sales conversation and would supersede every number above. Neither brand publishes acceptance rates, rejection rates, or how much of a distribution results in a live page.
