What "500+ outlets" actually means on a distribution invoice
· 6 min read
A "500+ outlets" line counts automated republications of one submission, not audiences reached. A single send routinely produces two rows on the same invoice on the same day, the count can rise without the footprint changing at all, and on the pages we opened the client's own link was usually stripped or nofollowed. That is measurable rather than a matter of opinion, and it explains almost every disappointment buyers report about press distribution.
We opened the full published footprint of four real distributions in August 2026 — every URL fetched or loaded in a browser, with the client's name confirmed in the rendered page body rather than assumed from the search snippet. Here is what the number was counting.
One submission, two placements
A garage-door repair company's release went out through ABNewswire on 28 August 2026. It appeared, verbatim, on Barchart and on StreetInsider the same day. StreetInsider labels it as plainly as anyone in this business does: "Paid press release content from GetNews. The StreetInsider.com news staff was not involved in its creation."
Two rows on an invoice. One submission. Neither page is fake, neither vendor did anything improper, and a buyer counting logos has already been misled by their own arithmetic.
A full footprint, counted honestly
Here is every published copy of one funding announcement distributed on GlobeNewswire on 26 May 2026, with what happened to the client's own link on each page.
| Page | Published | Client link |
|---|---|---|
| globenewswire.com (native permalink) | 26 May | nofollow, routed through a tracker redirect |
| AP News | 26 May | none — no link, and no plain-text URL either |
| Benzinga | 26 May | removed |
| Markets Insider (Business Insider) | 26 May | removed |
| Manila Times | 26 May | removed |
| Blockonomi | 26 May | nofollow |
| BlockTelegraph | 26 May | dofollow |
| CoinMarketCap | — | removed |
| Bitget | 27 May | removed |
| ITBrief UK | 27 May | removed |
| Pulse2 — earned, not from the wire | 27 May | removed |
| tech.eu — earned, not from the wire | 26 May | dofollow |
Ten of those pages are wire copies. Of the ten: one carried a link that passes search-engine credit, two carried nofollow links, and seven carried no link to the client at all. Several outlets republished the entire announcement and simply deleted the URL. What decides that is the subject of its own piece.
The two pages that were not bought — tech.eu and Pulse2 — are journalists covering the news. One of them carried the only unambiguous dofollow link in the set, and it cost nothing.
Five further pages that the vendor cited could not be confirmed either way: Investing.com, The Defiant, FinSMEs and Dealroom all returned 403 to every client we tried, and Binance Square renders in JavaScript. Not confirmed is not the same as not there, and we would rather say so than pad a table.
Sometimes the number is manufactured
Two of the four distributions we traced were run through two different wires a few days apart — one on Newsfile on 25 June and again on MarketersMedia on 29 June, the other on both wires within a day. Same announcement, two footprints, one piece of news. If you count outlets, that looks like twice the reach. If you count readers, it is the same release passing the same aggregators twice.
The count inflates without the footprint changing
The published tier ladders give the game away. RedPress moves from "400+" to "1,300+" outlets for a 60% price rise. IssueWire climbs from 225+ to 700+ between a $21 tier and a $65 one. Nothing about the underlying network changes that fast; the counting rule does.
The clearest admission in the market comes from BrandPush, which sells six curated placements for $595 — more per placement than its own 400-outlet tier at $795. A vendor charging more for six than for four hundred has told you exactly what the four hundred are worth.
On the wholesale side the phrase is simply a plan label. PRNow's published self-serve catalogue lists a $15 plan described as 300+ sites and a $29 plan described as 500+ sites with TV and radio. When a vendor quotes you "500+ outlets", that string may be a $29 line item on their supplier's invoice.
The copies are not permanent, either
Digital Journal segments its press-release archive by the wire that fed it, one path per wire. We checked each section index. ACCESS Newswire, GlobeNewswire and 24-7PressRelease return 200. Five others — GetNews, IndNewswire, Vehement Media, PR Distribution and Binary News Network — return 410 Gone, and individual article URLs from those sections return 410 while sitting in the search index.
410 is not a 404. It is the status a publisher returns specifically to tell search engines that a page is permanently removed and should be de-indexed. The split is exact: every purged section is a low-cost reseller wire.
Two more decay findings from the same sweep. A MarketWatch press-release URL that the vendor who sold it still cites as a placement renders "Page Not Found" in a real browser. An MSN URL still returned by search renders "This story is unavailable" — MSN re-hosts partner publishers under a licence window, and when the window closes the page goes.
So an outlet count taken on the day of distribution is not an outlet count six months later, and nobody selling you one can promise otherwise. We do not.
Three questions that settle it
Ask any distributor, including us:
- How many of these are distinct submissions, and how many are automatic republications of one?
- Which of them will you list by URL, rather than by logo?
- Which URLs did you open yourself, and which are you copying from the network's pickup report?
The third question is the one that separates a coverage report from a send receipt. A supplier's pickup report is a list of where a feed was pushed. It is not evidence that a page exists, and the 410s above are what the difference looks like.
We use the number too
Our packages say 500+ outlets, so it would be incoherent to write this article and leave that unexplained.
What it counts: the outlets we name, plus several hundred regional and trade sites that the network sends to automatically and that mostly republish near-identical copy. Twenty-six outlets are itemised by name in our catalogue, each carrying whether its links pass SEO credit — and each with its domain rating withheld wherever we cannot yet attribute that figure to a source, which today is every one of them. Every URL that goes live is listed in the report, not summarised as a count.
And the reports draw the line this article is about: we verify what was sold and count what was syndicated. Named placements and high-authority domains are opened and checked individually. The syndication tail is reported from the supplier's pickup report and labelled as reported, never presented as verified. It is a smaller claim than "500+ outlets verified", and it is one we can actually stand behind on the day you ask us to prove it.
Where these figures came from
- Four real distributions traced August 2026: every URL fetched or opened in a browser, client name confirmed in the rendered body after stripping URLs from the HTML
- RFC 9110, HTTP Semantics, section 15.5.11 — the definition of the 410 (Gone) status code and of the permanence it asserts: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9110.html#name-410-gone
- Google Search Central, "How HTTP status codes affect Google crawlers" — the indexing pipeline removes a URL returning 4xx from the index: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/http-network-errors
- BrandPush published pricing — the $595 tier sold as six premium placements against the $795 tier sold as 400 placements from a 400+ outlet network: https://www.brandpush.co/pricing
- PRNow.io published pricing, plans starting at $15: https://prnow.io/pricing. Plan labels and list prices also read from its public catalogue endpoint GET /api/v1/packages, unauthenticated
- Digital Journal wire-section index checks: /pr/news/{access-newswire,globenewswire,24-7-press-release} returned 200; /pr/news/{getnews,indnewswire,vehement-media,pr-distribution,binary-news-network} returned 410 Gone. Cited rather than linked: the host refuses automated requests
- StreetInsider paid-content disclosure text, read from a live page dated 28 August 2026. Cited rather than linked, for the same reason
- Published tier ladders and outlet counts: RedPress, IssueWire, BrandPush
- Internal research: research/competitor-placements.md, research/placement-examples.md, research/wires-and-competitors.md
We distribute press releases to 300+ outlets, then open every published link and report what actually went live.
