PR Newswire vs Business Wire: only one publishes a rate card

· 6 min read

PR Newswire publishes a rate card and Business Wire does not. Cision's official 2024 domestic guide is public as a PDF and prices every circuit, from $1,020 for US1 National at 400 words up to $10,375 for Premier Global. Business Wire publishes no rate card, no editorial guidelines and no content policy on any public URL we could find, so there is no like-for-like price comparison to be made.

Almost every article comparing these two prints a Business Wire price table. Business Wire does not publish one. The numbers in those tables trace back to a single secondary source that labels its own figures "industry estimates, not gospel", and they have been copied forward for years.

So this comparison is built the other way round: what each company actually publishes, and what follows from the difference.

What PR Newswire publishes

Cision publishes no pricing on prnewswire.com. Its official 2024 Domestic Pricing Guide is nonetheless public, hosted as a PDF by the Independent Book Publishers Association. That document is the only tier-one rate card a buyer can read without a sales call.

PR Newswire circuit, 2024 card400 wordsEach extra 100 words
12-month membership$305 a year, flat
US1 National$1,020$325
Top Markets$790$235
Regional (NE, SE, MW, W-SW)$715$205
Metro (DC, NY Metro, NJ and NYC)$590$175
Other state or local$460$170
Multicultural Markets plus US1$2,045$435
Pan Europe or Pan Asia$4,285$1,165

World Financial Markets$5,760$1,535
World General Media$6,070$1,670
Premier Global$10,375$2,760

The same card prices the add-ons separately: AP News direct placement $310, logo $595, image, video or audio $490 each, PDF $490, SocialBoost $120. We took every line of it apart elsewhere.

Cision also publishes a full editorial policy, under its self-serve brand PRWeb, listing refused categories by name.

What Business Wire publishes

A price of zero pages. We probed the pricing page directly in August 2026; the site sits behind an Akamai bot shield and returned nothing to automated requests. No rate card exists on any public URL we could find.

Business Wire also publishes no content policy. The document at /legal/prohibited-business-practices-policy is Berkshire Hathaway's anti-corruption and anti-money-laundering policy, not a set of content rules — a distinction worth making because it is often cited as though it were the latter. Candidate URLs and sitemap paths were probed directly; no editorial guidelines page exists.

None of that is a criticism. Quote-only pricing is a legitimate commercial choice and the largest enterprise vendors in most industries make it. It is simply a fact with consequences for a buyer, and the consequence is that you cannot compare Business Wire on price before speaking to a salesperson.

The figures that circulate — roughly $760 for 400 words national, $195 per extra 100, $425 for the first multimedia item, and no membership fee — come from Prezly's comparison table, which labels them as estimates. We are flagging them as reported rather than laundering them into a table of our own.

Ownership, which is publishable and differs

Business Wire is a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, listed on Berkshire's own subsidiary page. It has been part of that group since 2006, and the ownership has not changed hands since.

PR Newswire belongs to Cision, which has passed through private-equity ownership and consolidation over the same period. That difference in ownership stability is one of the few genuinely comparable, publishable facts about the two, and it matters more than it sounds: who owns the wires has changed repeatedly across this industry in the last two years, and ownership churn is what moves wholesale terms and archive policy.

The structural difference a buyer can act on

PR Newswire's distribution is resold at several published price points. PRWeb, Cision's own self-serve brand, describes its output as syndication via PR Newswire and sells tiers at $120 to $480. eReleases sells "custom national PR Newswire distribution" at $399 to $699 and quotes the equivalent PR Newswire list value at $1,145 to $1,875. PRUnderground names the "PRNewswire/Cision network" on a $419.99 tier. 24-7PressRelease's $479 tier says PR Newswire national in as many words, capped at 375 words.

We found no equivalent published reseller programme for Business Wire. If your requirement is "get onto this specific network at the lowest published price", that asymmetry is the practical answer: one of these networks has four priced public doors and the other has one private one. How the reseller layer works explains the mechanics, and PRWeb versus PR Newswire covers the two doors onto the same rails in more detail.

What is genuinely comparable

  • Both reach the full financial circuit, including the terminal and aggregator footprint that self-serve wires cannot. That is what the price difference against the mid-market buys.
  • Both meter by word count. The Cision card is explicit at 400 words then $325 per 100 on the national circuit; the Business Wire structure is reported to be similar with a lower overage. Ask for it in writing.
  • Neither guarantees publication anywhere. A wire distributes; downstream sites republish at their own discretion, and no wire promises otherwise.
  • Link treatment is not a differentiator. Almost every syndicated press link is nofollow or rel="sponsored" regardless of which network carried it. If a reseller of either network sells you on search credit, read why that argument is usually wrong.

How to actually decide

If you need a price before a conversation, PR Newswire is the only one of the two you can budget against, and the 2024 card is the document to budget from. If you are running an enterprise or investor-relations programme, both will quote, and the quote is where the real comparison happens — ask each for the same thing in writing: circuit, word allowance, overage rate, multimedia cost, membership or platform fee, and what the reporting deliverable contains.

That last item is where most of the disappointment in this market lives. A distribution report tells you where a release was sent, not where it published; a send receipt is not a coverage report, and neither company sells the second thing as standard.

Where we sit

We are a reseller, not a wire. We buy distribution from wire partners and mark it up — the ordinary structure of this market, and we would rather state it than have you infer it. Our packages run $599 to $899, which is a different product class from either company above: no terminal reach, no filing agency, no enterprise service level. What we add is that we open the published URLs and report what actually went live, and the report that produces is published before you buy rather than described.

If you need a tier-one circuit, buy a tier-one circuit. We have just given you the only public price list for one of them.
